Weathering the Storms: Building a Stronger Philippines

   The Philippines is a vibrant mosaic of islands, battered by the temper of nature. Typhoons sweep in and leave their imprint on homes and livelihoods, and then hearts dwelling here. Earthquake rumbles on the ground, and volcanoes convulse, reminding all of the enormity of power under our feet. When they view such intense changes-climate is shifting which will bring hardship upon the faces of the Filipinos and makes them lose strength on rebuilding. A constant fight against odds, worse by poverty, nonexistence in infrastructure, and lack of preparedness. However, the Filipino spirit never gives-in-it shines bright as a hope against adversity.

    It acts on the determination given by a sensitive mix of resolve and pity, enhancing infrastructure, developing early warning systems, and encouraging communities to prepare for the inevitable. Now, the NGOs-the vigilant watchdog-help out in relief operations, rehabilitation, and even building a community. But the resilient Philippines finds its own journey rather dauntingly difficult along the way. Scarce resources, complex governance, and alarming levels of climate change loom large in threatening the nation. Still, the Filipino spirit stands firm. Building up stronger Philippines requires collective effort. It would be a harmonious collaboration of voices.

    The investment is resilient infrastructure and encouragement of sustainable environmental practices would form some of the essential elements of such harmonious collaboration. Safety would involve community control among others. Harmonized government agencies, civil society organizations, and the private sector-singing in chorus-can be a very powerful force for change. To really weather the storm, to become a stronger, and to find a new chapter in its story, the Philippines must attend to the root causes of vulnerability, strengthen already established initiatives, and adopt innovative solutions.

Violence against women is one of the worst social problems facing the world and the Philippines. Results from the 2022 National Demographic and Health Survey indicate that almost 1 in 5 women experience emotional, physical, or sexual violence by their partner. This is where laws, including Republic Act (R.A.) No. 9262, popularly referred to as the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children (VAWC) Act of 2004, play their role of protection of these women against these violations and promoting the gender equality principle.  R.A. 9262 has been viewed as a landmark one as it criminalizes other forms of abuse against the women and children, including physical, psychological, emotional, economic, and sexual abuse. Elpidio Quirino, the sixth president of the Philippines, was a strong and visionary leader. He was born on November 16, 1890, in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, and grew up in simple beginnings that shaped his commitment to public service.
