The Filipino Chinese New Year Celebration: A Unity and Prosperity Practice

    Chinese New Year, or more commonly known as the Lunar New Year, is one of the Philippines' most spectacular celebrations with the purpose of exhibiting the nation's great historical and cultural bond with China and the Chinese. Witnessed by all Filipino-Chinese and by large numbers of Filipinos who sympathize and look up to the celebratory tradition which characterizes the celebration, Chinese New Year also signals the start of the Chinese lunar calendar. Filipinos, as in all other years, will celebrate in 2025 with dragon dances, fireworks, family reunions, and distributing red envelopes or ang pao. The success of the celebration is a testament to the widespread influence of Chinese culture on Filipinos. The historical presence of the Chinese community in the Philippines is one of the most fundamental reasons why Filipinos celebrate Chinese New Year.


    Chinese immigrants and traders have shaped Philippine society, especially in economics, food, language, and traditions, for centuries already. Filipino customs had integrated and included practices such as those of China regarding the observation of Lunar New Year over time. It is something that has become a common belief among Filipinos in Chinese zodiac, feng shui, and favorable and auspicious beliefs, rendering Chinese New Year celebration relevant even to descendants of non-Chinese origin. Chinese New Year is also a celebration of reunion, prosperity, and renewal, all of which are something most Filipinos would be able to identify with. The fiesta is also viewed as a way of inviting good fortune and bliss in the years to come.

    Filipinos are all hurrying to do things like setting round fruits as gifts of abundance, exploding firecrackers to chase away evil spirits, and using red for good fortune. These customs attest to the Filipinos' belief in paswerte (good luck) and giving respect to actions that would infuse good vibes. In the end, the Chinese New Year festival in the Philippines is a demonstration of the cultural diversity of the country and its open policy of adopting such customs that would bring happiness and prosperity to people's lives.
